Yo, c’est Sir Kyrou et aujourd’hui on va parler de… Ouais, de Portal. Titre édité et développé par Valve, sorti le 10 octobre 2007 et se classant plus ou moins dans la mythologie de la série Half-Life. Disponible sur PC/Mac, Xbox 360 et PS3 soit seul soit en pack avec Half-Life 2 et Team Fortress 2, ce petit est une expérience qui se doit d’être faite dans la vie de tous les gamers, tant par l’originalité de son gameplay que par son ambiance. Nous allons voir pourquoi.
Commençons par le début, c’est plus simple. Vous vous réveillez dans une sorte de chambre avec une petite musique de fond, quand une voix vous parle et vous demande de passer par le portail qu’elle vient d’ouvrir. Naturellement, vous vous soumettez, faute de pouvoir faire un autre choix. C’est ce qui va se passer pendant les ¾ du jeu. Cette fameuse voix n’est d’ailleurs rien d’autre qu’une IA nommée Genetic Lifeform And Disk Operating System, ou GladOS, pour les intimes. Elle sera, outre les bruitages, la SEULE CHOSE que vous entendrez dans Portal et vous donnera des ordres/informations tout au long de l’aventure. Notons aussi qu’elle est doublée par Ellen McLain, qui a joué des voix pour Half-Life 2 et Team Fortress 2 (de Valve également) et plus récemment celle de l’ordinateur central du génial Pacific Rim de Guillermo Del Toro.
Bon. Nous voilà partis pour réaliser des tests pour notre IA, sans échappatoire possible. Yapiyap c’est génial on est dans un couloir à la FF XIII. MAIS. Au fur et à mesure de l’avancée des tests, notre seule interaction avec l’extérieur du jeu commence à avoir des pulsions quelque peu meurtrières, au point que ça en devient flippant. Mais trêve de blabla, venons-en aux concepts originaux du titre de Valve : les portails. En effet, le principe du jeu est d’utiliser votre « Portal gun » et de créer une entrée et une sortie pour résoudre le test proposé et passer au suivant. Tests qui seront de plus en plus durs au fur et à mesure de votre avancée dans les labos d’Aperture, incluant certaines mécaniques de gameplay assez bonnes comme par exemple sauter dans un portail plusieurs mètres en dessous de vous pour gravir des obstacles à l’aide d’un autre, placé ailleurs (vous gardez votre vitesse d’entrée lors de la sortie), parce que Portal, comme dirait Jacques, « c’est pas pour les pédés ».
Mais derrière cette ambiance d’asile de fous et ces énigmes qui peuvent vous prendre un certain temps si vous êtes très fatigué se cache une esthétique simpliste, trop simpliste. Vous êtes dans un labo dirigé par une IA complètement timbrée, donc c’est vrai qu’il ne faut pas s’attendre à une très grande variété de décors dans les salles de test. Mais si vous avez un minimum de logique, les niveaux s’enchaînent et se ressemblent jusqu’au dernier, où on voit la seule « variation » d’environnement. Un défaut oublié rapidement grâce à un autre : la durée de vie. Et ouais, le jeu m’a personnellement fait deux heures. Ça peut monter jusqu’à quatre ou cinq si vous voulez vous lancer dans les niveaux avancés, mais ce n’est pas assez pour réellement se lasser des décors répétitifs. Bon et mauvais point en même temps… Bien joué Valve.
Portal est donc un titre que vous vous devez de faire un jour. Malgré ses petits défauts, l’originalité du gameplay et l’ambiance instaurée par GladOS font de ce jeu une magnifique expérience qui vous permettra, entre autres, de tester votre logique et votre réactivité. Un deuxième opus est d’ailleurs disponible et propose un mode coopératif qui manquait au premier épisode. Vous pouvez également sauter dessus (la critique de KW ici). Oh, pendant qu’on y est, regardez Portal : No Escape, le très cool court métrage réalisé par Dan Trachtenberg. Moi je vous dis à la prochaine, pour une nouvelle critique sur GameurZ !
